Q&A with Harry

Harry White works within our design division as a Trainee Design Engineer. Harry is a great believer in Apprenticeships and has developed quickly in his relatively short time with us. He’s already taking a leading role in creating his own designs and recently gained some experience within our Lindsey Installation division, where he ran his own project and was able to see how the designs he produces are used and applied in the installation world.

My first day at Lindsey Group was… in August 2016.
Having just left school in May that year, Lindsey’s couldn’t have made the transition from school to work-life any smoother. Since then I haven’t looked back and the past few years has flown by!
I’ve developed the most in… my communication and people skills.
I believe coming across the right way and having confidence when talking to Clients, Contractors and Suppliers is a crucial know-how I learnt very quick here. And of course - my understanding and knowledge of mechanical building services and the construction industry in general. It has evolved from day one, and will continue to grow until I retire! Having spent time in both Design and Installation, I’ve learnt key roles varying from producing drawings and writing specifications to projecting labour forecasts, co-ordinating the installation on site and ensuring we’re maintaining profitability.

To me, Lindsey Design is about… having the freedom and using our creative perceptions to meet the client’s demands.
Whether that’s an architect, builder or directly with the end user, our job is to take the problem off the client’s hands. Lindsey Design is about doing our upmost efforts to ensure the client receives what they’re looking for - keeping within budget, trend and style.

The best thing about my team is… our togetherness and work ethic.
We are all on the same wave-length which is a major factor in providing first class service, no matter the client. Our focused work-style ensures that we consistently get results by providing the best systems for our clients. It’s a pleasure to say I work at Lindsey Group.

Something I never expected… was to be involved in such a vast variety of projects.
We cover every type of building you could think of, big or small. This results in our ever-growing knowledge expanding even further by coming across new and exciting systems everyday. No project is the same which is great! It’s also fantastic that we can offer performance specifications and ‘design and build’ projects as well as full designs which go out to tender.

The advice I would give to anyone considering starting a career in building services is… to get within and become surrounded in the industry as much as possible.
Apprenticeships are most definitely the future as you can do exactly that, while learning and progressing through college and uni at the same time. I see it as almost a head start!

What’s next for me…
After finishing my Level 3 BTEC I’m going to be starting my HNC qualification this year on a day release scheme to college. Then hopefully enhance my qualifications further on by taking on a higher degree equivalent qualification. All while I’m learning within the work place at the same time!
